Beating up to 100,000 times per day, the heart performance not only plays a critical role in patients with cardiac diseases but also in patients with other critical health issues, thus needing tight monitoring. We have created a completely new and unique ultrasound sensor that safely and non-invasively monitors cardiac performance.
Ultrasound is a proven and intrinsically safe diagnostic imaging technology. But it has never been used in a wearable-like format for monitoring applications.
Our patch consists of a flexible 2D array of ultrasound transducers, providing conformal contact with the skin and emitting and receiving ultrasound signals. After sending an ultrasound pulse into the patient’s body, the reflected ultrasound signals are processed by electronic systems to yield images of the inner organs. By shooting ultrasound beams from multiple positions in the large area patch, a 3D image of the organ is generated.
Our smart algorithm uses this 3-dimensional data to reconstruct the left ventricle contour and directly calculate volumes and related physiological parameters, such as cardiac output, that allow for early detection of heart function failure.
The cardiac patch is connected via a reusable connector cable to a patch companion device.
